Stewardship of Mount Sunapee
In 1910, the first campaign to protect land
on Mount Sunapee began with Herbert Welsh
and Philip Ayres of the newly formed Society for
the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. By 1934,
the Forest
Society secured over 1100 acres on Mount Sunapee. In 1948, this land
was central to the formation of
Mount Sunapee State Park, now encompassing
2900 acres—spectacular, publicly owned land, forested
highlands to sandy beach front.
Yes, with the passage of time, change has come to the
mountain, the park and ski area within. Yet, Mount Sunapee’s
heritage endures.
As demonstrated long ago on Mount Sunapee, environmental stewardship
requires public awareness, education and action to
protect our special places and natural resources.
